This past week in class during critique some class member’s books included a dedication page while others did not. Dedications can be quotes from the author or a simple or not so simple “thank you” for impacting the author at some point in their lives. The dedication page is placed after the main title page inside the front matter.
In designing book one I decided to insert a dedication. I had fun writing it although it was pulled from none other than my imagination. I imagine for most book authors though, the dedication page may be difficult to write. After all, the dedication page is one of the first pages you read in a book and it can be very personal. And depending on how personal the dedication, authors may realize that the book and the dedication may have a long shelf life. For that reason, some authors may find writing the dedication is harder than writing the book.
Some dedications are log, some short. This memorable dedication below is just right in the middle. What a fitting dedication for a children’s fantasy novel, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis.
What is your favorite or most memorable book dedication?
