Before this class I never followed any book designers or even researched them. I briefly browsed and found Christopher Sergio, an art director at Penguin House who also has a freelance business that focuses on book covers. Here is the bio from his website:
Chris Sergio is an Art Director at Penguin Random House, where he oversees three imprints: Portfolio, Current and Sentinel.
Christopher Sergio Design is his freelance design studio, with a special focus on book covers, film posters, art and photography books, exhibition design, and environments.
Sergio has won numerous awards in recognition of his design, including from the Type Directors Club (Judge's Choice Award), AIGA (50 Books/50Covers), Print Magazine (Regional Design Annual),Communication Arts (Typography Annual), and others.
In Spring 2011, in collaboration with the designer Catherine Casalino, he launched the online petition"Save 50/50" and galvanized the design community in a successful effort to save the historic 50 Books / 50 Covers competition, hosted annually by the American Institute of Graphic Arts.
Sergio has worked in both publishing (Random House, Penguin USA, Simon and Schuster), and in the Arts (for the American theatre artist Robert Wilson, and with Vito Acconci.) He is an Alumni of the Rhode Island School of Design, LaGuardia High School of Music and Art, and the Art Students League. He is a native of New York City.
