Rodrigo Corral has designed covers for Pulitzer
Prize winning author Junot Díaz and bestselling authors Chuck Palahniuk and
John Green, among many others. He also designed the New York Times bestselling
books Decoded by Jay-Z and Influence by Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen.
I read an article this week where Rodrigo was interviewed. When you think about all the book covers Rodrigo has designed (let alone
celebrity authors like Jay-Z, Olsen twins, etc.) you wonder what the relationship
is like between book designer and author?
Rodrigo says he "doesn’t have much, if any,
contact with the authors." He says that messages are transferred through the
publisher but there is never a dialogue with the author during a cover design.
When Rodrigo designed the book for Mary-Kate and
Ashley Olsen he did work with them directly, but according to Rodrigo, “that
book was about them, so the contribution required was altogether different.”
Interesting how that process works.
